Design Process

Like most artwork, the concept for my project began with a vision; to portray the effects of stress and anxiety of life that often goes unnoticed or ignored by many. To adequately depict this idea, I decided to base the main focus of my piece with a fragmented, humanoid figure that represents these emotionally broken individuals.

My project consists of four 18 in x 24 in sheets of paper each formatted in their own respective quadrant. Every quadrant goes through the same design process, all starting with a blank canvas.

First, I tape the appropriate sides of the paper in order to create a white border once the tape is removed.

Next, I draw over the entire surface of the paper in charcoal.

After adding another layer of charcoal, I then use my fingers to rub across the paper to create a more solid, gray color.

By repeating the previous steps once more, the end result should be a solid, evenly distributed gray texture.

Once the texture is established, the next step is to finally start drawing the rough outline of my piece with charcoal.

With the piece now drawn, all I need to do is add the finishing details. As for the other quadrants, I simply repeat the process over again.

In order to visually connect all four quadrants together, my original concept was to draw an enveloping vine that wraps around all of the various body parts.

In the end, I abandoned the ivy vine design due to time constraints, however I did not discard the concept entirely. Instead, I went for a more ambiguous, dark tendril that wraps around the body, effectively connecting all of the quadrants. I also prefer the stark contrast between the inky, black tendril and the white, fragmented body.
